Police command, Calabar, Cross River State — May 4, 2026
Students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) staged a protest on Monday, May 4, 2026, over alleged delays in medical treatment at the General Hospital Calabar following a fatal road crash that killed four people, including three students and a staff driver.
May 1 Auto Crash
According to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and police reports, 24 UNICROSS students and one staff member were involved in a collision with a container truck along the Calabar–Itu Highway in Odukpani on the evening of May 1, 2026. Four people died, while several others sustained severe injuries. NANS JCC Chairman Victor Asuquo expressed “strong concern and dissatisfaction over reports that some affected students were initially denied or delayed medical attention at the General Hospital”.
May 4 Protest and Alleged Shooting
On May 4, students marched to the General Hospital and subsequently to the Governor’s Office to demand accountability for the alleged treatment delays. Unconfirmed reports from protesters claim that during a confrontation near the Governor’s Office, operatives of the Cross River State Police Command opened fire, resulting in two student fatalities and multiple injuries.
